Travel Insurance

1. Why Travel Insurance Matters
Safari trips often involve advance payments, remote destinations, and activities that carry inherent risk. Travel insurance helps protect you against cancelled or cut-short trips, medical emergencies, evacuation, lost or delayed baggage, and other unforeseen events. Many operators and destinations do not provide full refunds for last-minute cancellations, so insurance can be the difference between losing your investment and recovering it.
2. What to Cover
We recommend a policy that includes at least the following:
- Trip cancellation and interruption: Reimbursement if you must cancel before departure or cut your trip short for covered reasons (illness, family emergency, etc.).
- Emergency medical and evacuation: Medical treatment abroad and emergency evacuation (e.g. by air) to a suitable facility. This is especially important in remote safari areas.
- Baggage and personal effects: Loss, theft, or delay of luggage and essentials.
- 24/7 assistance: A helpline for medical and travel emergencies.
Some policies also cover adventure activities; check that safari and game drives are included if you plan to do them.
3. Safari-Specific Considerations
African safaris often involve long-haul flights, multiple lodges or camps, and destinations with limited medical infrastructure. Medical evacuation from a national park or remote area can be very expensive. Ensure your policy covers the countries you visit, has sufficient medical and evacuation limits, and that you declare any pre-existing conditions as required so your cover remains valid.
4. When to Buy
Buy insurance as soon as you have a significant financial commitment (e.g. after paying a deposit). Many benefits, such as coverage for cancellation due to illness, only apply if you were not already ill when you bought the policy. Read the terms and exclusions carefully.
5. How to Get Covered
You can purchase travel insurance through comparison sites, your bank, or specialist providers. AfriTours does not sell insurance; we recommend you compare options and choose a policy that fits your itinerary and needs. Your operator may also suggest or offer a preferred provider—you are free to use them or your own.
